The United States is the only country in the major sporting world that does not have a national coaching education program.
There are no federal laws requiring coaching education at any level of competition.
Currently, the way to become trained as a coach in the United States is to complete a university degree program, a National Governing Body of Sports certification program, and/or a youth sports coaching education program. Coaching education programs have been developed by individuals, organizations, and universities. However, there have been no standards for these programs until 1996 when the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) developed national coaching education standards. NASPE is now in the process of developing an accreditation program. For more information contact NASPE, 1900 Association Drive, Reston, VA 22091, 703-476-3410.
The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has mandated that all coaches participating under USOC governance--which includes those coaching at US Olympic Training Center facilities--will be required to receive certification in the new Sport Safety Training Course developed by the American Red Cross/USOC listed below. Fore more information about National Governing Bodies of Sports contact the USOC, One Olympic Plaza, Colorado Springs, CO 80909, 719-632-5551.
The Red Cross/USOC course is available to all coaches including those at the grass roots level. Please contact your local chapter of the American Red Cross to learn more about the Sports Safety Training.
The NYSSF has published a coaching education fact sheet and a coaching education programs resource sheet which are listed in the Publications section of the website.
