Ways To Promote Youth Sports Safety

Join the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (NYSSF) to keep current on the latest research, guidelines and resources on youth sports safety.

Celebrate National Youth Sports Safety Month.

Get a proclamation from your mayor or governor recognizing National Youth Sports Safety Month.

Develop a list of all the organizations that offer youth sports programs in your community. Contact them regarding National Youth Sports Safety Month, and promote the resources and services of the NYSSF.

Create a list of your community's sports fields and playgrounds. Check them for hazards. These would include, glass, rocks, debris, pot holes, and movable soccer goals which are not secured as they may tip over when climbed on and cause injuries. See www.cpsc.gov for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's guidelines on movable soccer goals.

Write letters in support of youth sports safety to school boards, athletic directors and administrators of youth sports programs. Encourage them to have an emergency plan and an immediate first responder in case of an injury. Also encourage them to take a leadership role in advocating coaching education.

Contact your local media regarding youth sports safety.

Hold a sports safety event for your community (suggested events).

Offer to speak at PTA meetings, schools, health clubs, recreation centers and youth sports groups about sports safety.

Invite local professional athletes to talk with students regarding conditioning, training, and sports safety.

Host an awards ceremony honoring coaches or youth sports programs which have made safety of the athletes the number one priority.

Have your local professional organizations and community health organizations run an article or press release regarding National Youth Sports Safety Month in their newsletter.

Purchase copies of the Foundation's literature and plan ways to disseminate the NYSSF's guidelines and fact sheets to your local youth sports programs in your community.

Contact the NYSSF and let us know about the sports safety efforts in your community so we can recognize them in our quarterly newsletter, SIDELINES.
